Chester Chet Mearl Pool

Funeral for Chester "Chet" Mearl Pool, 74, Lawton, will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Capt. Rick Way officiating.
Mr. Pool died Sunday, March 21, 2004, in Lawton.
Burial with full military honors will be at Fort Sill National Cemetery.
He was born Nov. 8, 1929, in Austwell, Texas, to Henrietta Coward and Elmer Harrison Pool. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 24, 1948, and achieved the rank of sergeant first class in 1961. He was a member of the occupation forces in Japan and was appointed in May 1961 as a warrant officer in the AG Corp. In June 1963 he received a direct commission as a first lieutenant. By the time he retired in 1972 he had obtained the rank of major. During his 30-year military career he served two tours in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He received many awards, including the Army Occupation Medal of Japan, Korean Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. In 2003 he was awarded the Korean War Service Medal to recognize his service in the Korean War. After retirement, he grew and bred orchids, several of which are mentioned in the "Royal Horticulture Society Sanders List of Orchid Hybrids." He won several dominos trophies in a two-state area. He also researched and provided data used to develop a number of World War II computer games.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie and Debbie Pool, San Antonio; two daughters and sons-in-law: Shirley and John Bailey and Patty and Bobby Butenhoff, all of Oklahoma City; a grandson, David Bailey, Oklahoma City; and many friends.
