Both Wes and Katie Lou were born in Coleman County at Fisk, Texas. Mrs. Kile's parents were Mr. and Mrs. Art Abernathy. Katie Lou had one brother, A. C. Abernathy, who passed away in 1971. Mr. Kile's parents were Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Kile. Wesley had four brothers and one sister. Two brothers, Luke Kile and Wayne Kile passed away in 1986. Brother Curtis Kile, lives in Sabinal, Texas, and brother, Ben Kile, lives in Abilene, Texas. Wesley's sister, Winnie Lane, lives in Bangs, Texas.
Wesley and Katie Lou met at church and grew up together. Katie had several beaux, but Wes won out in the end. Wes loves to tell the story of the big tree surrounded by a dirt road in front of Katie's house. When Wes came to call on Katie and saw that one of her other beaux had reached Katie's house first, Wes skidded his car around that tree as fast as possible in order to create enough commotion and dust to attract Katie's attention.
Wes and Katie's dating activities in the late thirties revolved around going to a lot of parties and playing snap. When Katie is asked about historical events she remembers in the late thirties, she quickly responds, "I believe Columbus came over then didn't he?" Neither Wes nor Katie can remember who proposed to whom, Katie describes her bes beau as "that handsome one with the pretty dark curly hair." When Wes went to ask Mr. Abernathy for Katie's hand, Mr. Abernathy never did give Wes an answer. Katie Lou states that when her father realized that she was about to leave the nest, that was the only time she ever saw her father cry.
Wes and Katie Lou were wed on Saturday, January 2, 1937 by Church of Christ minister, Brother Grady Pricer. The couple appeared at the Silver Valley home of Brother Pricer just past sunset. When Brother Pricer answered the door knock, Wes said, "Bet you can't guess why we came up here!" Witnesses to the grand event were Grady Pricer's wife, Eulala, and Mrs. Haden Hart. Bertha McQueen gave a wedding shower for Wes and Katie a week after the ceremony.
Wes and Katie's first home was five miles southwest of Coleman on the Ballinger Highway. They farmed and ranched in the Fisk and Brown Ranch communities. In the early sixties, Wes and Katie owned and operated the Manhatten Cafe in Coleman. They are members of the Elm Street Church of Christ. Presently, the Kiles reside in Coleman.
