The Crenshaw family begins with some certainty with Nathaniel Crenshaw. We don't know a great deal about Nathaniel, we are not sure who his parents are, the thinking is that his father was out of the Thomas Crenshaw family of Virginia. There is no proof of this, it is merely speculation, therefore, I will not name the suspected son of Thomas we feel is probably Nathaniel's father. There is one of the sons of Thomas, that, to our knowledge, has never had his descendancy proven. Anyone wishing to explore the possibilities this presents please email me here

. He was born about 1790 and died after 1842.
Nathaniel, first appears in the records in Georgia, in the 1832 Land & Gold Lottery. He won Lot 770, District 21, Section 3 in Cobb County. He next appears in the 1840 census records of Cobb County, Georgia. Then, finally, he is reported to have murdered a man named Richard Burnett in 1842. The story goes that he saddled his horse in the middle of the night and rode off taking a child (adult child) with him, he was never heard from again. The adult child that he took with him was most likely, Henry Crenshaw. Henry was not enumerated in the 1840 as a head of household, in fact, we have no record of Henry before the marriage record to Ulala Mahala Harman in 1854.
Nathaniel married Sophia Lenderman before 1812, she was the daughter of John Lenderman and Catherine. She was born about 1792 and died between November 1850 and September 1851. After Nathaniel disappearance, Sophia and her children moved to Marshall County, Mississippi. She is found living there in 1850 with son Jesse. We know of her death because of a letter sent to William Crenshaw from his cousin, N.B. Lenderman (Nathan B.), son of Jacob Lenderman and Malinda Kellett, in September of 1851. Jacob and Sophia were siblings.
